Consumer Demand for Shell Eggs Improves

EGGS: Wholesale prices for cartoned shell eggs held steady through the week on moderate supplies and adequate offerings. Trading was slow to moderate. Wholesale prices for graded loose eggs weakened though the week as offerings became more available and supplies held at a comfortable level. Consumer demand for shell eggs continued to improve over the past week as an active retail promotional cycle provided some incentive to stimulate consumer buying.

FLOUR: Traders are keeping an eye on the drought conditions in the Dakotas as the crop’s uncertainty is providing a bullish tilt in the futures markets. Winter wheat harvest is underway in parts of Texas and is just around the corner in the mid-southern plains; however, with the excess rain lately, people are questioning the quality. There have been drought concerns for Russia as well; many expect that they will lower their output and cut their exports for the year.

BUTTER: Butter/fat spot prices were down across all the major exporters this week. Importers continue to push back at the high butter prices. Cream loosened up in both the US and EU this week. The stocks/ use ratio for the US still points to the risk of $2.00+ butter in coming months, but the market sure doesn’t feel very bullish right now. I’m forecasting US butter production down 11.5% for April.
